- JOHN COE OF STAMFORD, GREENWICH, AND RYE, AND SOME OF HIS DESCENDANTS
1. JOHN 1 COE*, the progenitor in New England of the family herewith treated, was born in England as early as 1622. As his first appearance in America was in 1641 at Stamford, Conn., where Robert * Coe was then located, it would seem probable he was related to the latter, and perhaps he was identical with the John Coe baptized at Stoke Nayland, co. Suffolk, England, Apr. 14, 1622, son of Henry 9 and Hester (Nyce) Coe, this Henry 8 Coe of Stoke Nayland being own cousin to Robert Coe the Puritan colonist of New England. (See ante, p. 62.)
John ' Coe first appears in Stamford, Conn., in 1641, and the follow- ing mentions of him appear in the records of that town:
Dec. 7, 1641. Jo Coe was granted a house-lot of two acres and a wood lot of three acres, several others receiving grants of lots at the same time.
Sept. [1642?] "Jo Coe his rate due to the town 13 sh. 8 d.," his name thus appearing in a tax list.
Apr. 25, 1647. "John Coo complayns agt Daniel Fenc [Finch] for destarbing ye ordnance of God on a Saboth Daye."
May 3, 1649. "At a Court: A Compleaynt by Humfry Trembe [Turner ?] agt Mark Menlove for prophaning ye name of God by oths, swaring ' by God's blood I think the devills in it.' Testimony of John Coo yt Mark Menlov upon ye selling of a chesill sayd before God he would have his pave."
May 13, 1651. "Witness an agreement or barging bettween John Coe the on pty and Ellyas Baylly ye other pty, that ye said John Coe
The "History of Rye" and other works have erroneously made this John '
Coe to be identical with Capt. John 2 Coe (Robert 1 ); but contemporary records show that John ' Coe was a resident at Rye then under Conn, jurisdiction, at the same time that Capt. John 2 Coe (Robert ') was a resident at Newtown, L. I., under New York jurisdiction.
The appended reproductions of signatures of Capt. John 2 Coe of Newtown, L. I., and of John ' Coe of Rye, indicate two separate individuals.

Sept. 14, 1663. Mar. 26, 1663. The later history of John ' Coe has not been learned and no records of his marriage and family can be found; but it can hardly be doubted that he was father of the two children given below and perhaps of others. Children :
i. Hannah 2 , b. about 1655, d. about 1700; in. about 1683, Capt. Titus Hinman, b. in Stratford, Conn., in Jan. 1655-6, son of Edward and Hannah (Stiles) Hinman. They were among the early settlers of Woodbury, Conn., where he d. Apr. 5, 1736. Children (Hinman):
1. Ephraim Hinman, bapt. July 26, 1685.
2. Joseph Hinman, bapt. in June 1687.
3. Andrew Hinman, bapt. in Apr. 1690, m. in Aug. 1711, Mary Noble, bapt. Oct. 16, 1692, daughter of John and Mary (Good- man) Noble. Children: Andrew, Hannah, Coe, Mary, Margaret, Aaron, Nathan, Elisha, Noble.
4. Titus Hinman, bapt. in June 1695. 2. ii. Andrew, b. about 1660.
2. ANDREW 2 COE John l ), born about 1660, first appears in 1679 as a witness on a deed in Stratford, Conn. In 1680 he was a witness on a deed in Rye, N. Y., where he resided thereafter, also owning meadow lots on Manursing Island. (" Hist, of Rye," p. 408.)
The records of Rye have the following mentions of him: Land granted to Andrew Coe at Port Chester, N. Y., Feb. 27, 1698-9. His house in Rye is mentioned in 1699 as near Fox Island. He was townsman in 1701, sergeant in 1705, and on Jan. 9, 1710-11 was appointed a vestry- man of Christ Church. In 1708 land was laid out to him at Port Chester. His later history has not been learned but he died before 1713, and was probably the only son of John ' Coe, at least that left issue.
He married about 1685, Deborah Lyon, daughter of Thomas and Mary (Hoyt) Lyon of Rye, N. Y.; she married second, William Proby of Rye, who in his will dated Feb. 26, 1731-2, names his stepdaughters and their husbands. (Westchester County Wills, p. 59.) Children born in Rye, N. Y. :
i. Samuel ', b. about 1685, had land at Port Chester laid out to him in 1713 in right of Andrew Coe. In 1715 his ear mark for cattle was assigned him and in 1718 he had further land laid out to him and also was fence-viewer. He d. without issue about 1720, and probably never married. His will dated Jan. 23, 1719-20 probated Jan. 23, 1724-5, names his mother Deborah Coe, brothers John Coe and Jonathan Coe, brother-in-law Nathan Kniffen, and sisters Phebe, Mary, and Hannah Coe.
