OF EDWARD JESSUP AND ELIZABETH BRIDGES AND STEP-DAUGHTER TO ELIZABETH (BRIDGES) JESSUP'S 2nd HUSBAND, ROBERT BEACHAM, WHO MENTIONS HIS (STEP) SON-IN LAW, JOSEPH LOCKWOOD IN HIS WILL. I'VE ATTACHED MY NOTES AND SOURCES WHICH SHOULD CLEAR UP THE MATTER ABOUT WHO WAS JOSEPH LOCKWOODS WIFE.

Edward JESSUP, son of John JESSUP, married first, ca.1643, to a daughter of his step-father, John WHITMORE, of Stamford, Conn.
John WHITMORE owned land in Wethersfield, Conn. in 1639. John WHITMORE was murdered by Indians in October 1648. He had issue: Thomas WHITMORE, John WHITMORE, and a dau. married Edward JESSOP. Prime, Temple, DESCENT of COMFORT SANDS (1886), PP.87-91.
In 1653 Edward JESSUP "and his mother, the Widow WHITMORE" left Stamford, Conn. for a residence at Newtown, L.I., New York. At that time, they appear to have constituted the entire adult portion of the family. --- That he had been previously married is evident from the fact that only thirteen years later he mentions in his will a married daughter and a grandchild. (Note: The "mother WHITMORE" referred to was Edward JESSUP's mother and step-mother of his first wife, a daughter of John WHITMORE. Joanna JESSUP, widow of John JESSUP married 2nd to John WHITMORE.)
Sometime after 1653, Edward JESSUP married second to Elizabeth BRIDGES (probably daughter or sister of Charles BRIDGES who married Sarah, dau. of Thomas CORNELL and widow of Thomas WILLET). Edward JESSUP had children: Elizabeth JESSUP m. Thomas HUNT, Jr.; Hannah JESSUP m. Joseph LOCKWOOD, Sr.; and Edward JESSUP.
Joseph LOCKWOOD was made a freeman, 13 Oct 1664, and is on the list of Freeman of Fairfield, Conn., 10 Oct 1669. Also on this same list were the names of Robert BEACHAM (step-father of Hannah JESSUP), Thomas MOREHOUSE, Samuel MOREHOUSE, and Daniel LOCKWOOD .
Edward JESSOP was Deputy from Westchester to Hempstead, L.I., N.Y. in 1665.
Edward JESSUP of Westchester Co., New York, made his will on 6 August 1666, and it was probated 14 November of the same year. His will is now on record in the Surrogate's Office in New York city (v.1,pp.31-33). He bequeathed twenty shillings to his daughter Elizabeth HUNT; to his daughter Hannah JESSOP the sum of five and thirty pounds to be paid her at eighteen years of age; to his son, Edward JESSOP, two mares with two colts by their sides; to his grandchild, Mary HUNT twenty shillings; to his "couzen" (niece) Johannah BURROUGHS twenty shillings; to Derrick GASSON a Cow calf; and the remainder of his estate to his wife, Elizabeth JESSOP. Elizabeth JESSOP, his wife, was named executrix. His "well beloved friends", Richard CORNHILL, Mrs. Sarah BRIDGES, "my well beloved brother-in-law" John BURROUGHS, and Ralph HUNT were named overseers. Surrogate's Office, N.Y., Liber I, fol.14. Of the names mentioned in the will of Edward JESSUP, Elisabeth Hunt was the wife of Thomas HUNT, Jr., and Mary HUNT was their daughter. Johannah BURROUGHS, Jessup's cousin (or niece as the word was then used), was the daughter of John BURROUGHS of Newtown, who married a REEDER. Derrick GASSON appears to have been a man in his employ. Mr. Richard CORNHILL (or CORNELL) came to Westchester Co. between 1655-1660. Mrs. Sarah BRIDGES was Sarah, daughter of Thomas CORNELL of Cornell's Neck in Westchester, patented to him July 26, 1646, by the Dutch governor, William KIEFT. Her first husband was Thomas WILLETT of Bristol, England, while her second husband was Charles BRIDGES. Ralph HUNT was a prominent Newtown man closely associated with JESSUP in the various conflicts between the town and the Dutch. Jesup, Rev. 1667 - "September 27, 1667 --- These presents witness that we Thomas HUNT and Henry GARDNER do testify upon oath, if occasion, that Elizabeth JESSUP had fully ordered and set forth three cows which are, the two black and white feet cows and one red cow, and two oxen which are called by the names of Swan and Sweetling, for settlement of the legacy given by my husband to my son Edward JESSUP, which legacy was the mares and the colts prized at twenty pounds."
1667 - Edward JESSUP's property in Newtown, L.I., N.Y. was sold by his widow to John KETCHAM (probably son of Edward and Mary (HALL) KETCHAM) who died in that town in 1697. Riker's NEWTOWN, p.89.
- Elizabeth BRIDGES, widow of Edward JESSUP, married second, 4 November 1668, to Robert BEACHAM, widower, of "Bankside" in Fairfield, Conn. (later Green's Farms, in the town of Westport). O'Callaghan's NEW YORK MARRIAGES. Robert BEACHAM came from England to Ipswich in 1651. He removed to Norwalk, Connecticut in 1654, and to Fairfield, Connecticut in 1664.
On 26 Jan 1669, Robert BEACHAM and Elizabeth JESSUP, "the wife formerly of Edward Jessup of Westchester," acknowledge the sale to Thomas HUNT of the land and "housing formerly owned by Edward JESSUP, and which he and John RICHARDSON purchased together." John Richardson, the surviving patentee to this land, appears to have united with Thomas HUNT the following year in making an equal division of these lands; for on 12 Aug 1669, occurs a record to this effect, signed by William HAYDEN, Samuel DRAKE, Thomas LAWRENCE, and Jonathan HAZARD as Commissioners. Subsequently, in 1711, the heirs of the patentees agreed to a second division. The order for the survey was signed by Thomas HUNT, Elizabeth LEGGETT (widow of Gabriel LEGGETT, and daughter of John RICHARDSON), John LAWRENCE, and Matthew PUGSLEY (husband of Mary HUNT, daughter of Thomas HUNT). Joseph LOCKWOOD, son of Robert LOCKWOOD, married, ca.1670, to Hannah JESSUP, daughter of Edward JESSUP of West Farms, Westchester Co., New York, and step-daughter of Robert BEACHAM.
Elizabeth BEACHAM sent her son, Edward JESSUP, not yet of age, to visit his brother-in-law, Thomas HUNT, bearing a letter and power of attorney, dated March 27, 1682:
"Loving Son, Thomas HUNT; After my love remembered unto you and yours, hopeing that you are in good health, as wee are at this tyme, blessed be the Lord for it. These are to certify you that I doe give my son Edward full power to receive and dispose of any estate that belongs unto him. Alsoe I doe earnestly desire you to be helpful unto him in the cause. Also I doe give my son Edward order to take up and dispose of any of my daughter Hannah's Jades (horses), for I have order from my son Joseph and his wife both. I rest. Your loving mother, Elizabeth BEACHAM."

Robert BEACHAM of Maximus Farms in Fairfield, Conn., (step) father-in-law of Joseph LOCKWOOD, made his will, 14 Nov 1688; the inventory was taken 2 Mar 1690, and both will and inventory was approved 10 Mar 1690, at Fairfield, Conn. "I give and bequeathed to my grandchild Robert LOCKWOOD all my lands and housing in Fairfield; --- fourscore pounds to my grandchild Susanna LOCKWOOD, and threescore pounds a piece to my other grandchildren, John LOCKWOOD and Sarah LOCKWOOD, when they respectively arrive at age according to law; excepting only my second division in Compo, which I have already given to Edward JESSUP. I give to my loving wife, Elizabeth BEACHAM, the use and improvement of all my houses and lands during her natural life --- I make my loving son-in-law, Joseph LOCKWOOD, sole executor of this my last will and testament --- Robert BEACHAM"
1690 - Elizabeth BEACHAM, on 25 Dec 1690, transferred by deed of gift all her property to her son Edward JESSUP. No reference is made to her daughter, Hannah (JESSUP) LOCKWOOD, who was living only eight years before.
Robert BEACHAM, in his will, mentions Joseph LOCKWOOD and LOCKWOOD grandchildren, but no mention is made of Hannah. The presumption is made that Hannah (JESSUP) LOCKWOOD died prior to 1688.

On 8 Oct 1674, Henry GREYE's farm at Maximus was deeded to Joseph LOCKWOOD, the heir of Robert LOCKWOOD. Conn. Col. Rec., p.239.
Joseph LOCKWOOD was among the proprietors of Fairfield granted the 'Fairfield Patent' on 26 May 1685. HUBBELL FAMILY HISTORY (1881), p.9,1685.
"Sergeant Joseph LOCKWOOD departed this life April 14th, 1717, aged 78 years, 8 months and 8 days." -- Fairfield Records.
